Will always protect interests of fishermen : Modi

Chennai, Feb 14 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday
assured that his government will always protect the rightful
interests of fishermen and that no Indian fishermen were under
Sri Lankan custody at present.
Speaking after launching and laying the foundation stone for
several projects here, he said the problems faced by our
fishermen is long-standing.
''I do not wish to go into the history of the problem. “But let me
assure you that my Government will always protect their rightful
interests'', he said, adding, his government had ensured early
release of fishermen whenever they were arrested in Sri Lanka.
''We have ensured early release whenever fishermen are apprehended
in Sri Lanka,” he said.
Pointing out that more than 1,600 fishermen have been released
during his tenure, the Prime Miniser said currently, there is no Indian
fisherman in Sri Lankan custody.
''Similarly, 313 boats have also been released and we are working
for the return of the rest of the boats'', he added.
Stating that the country was proud of its fishermen communities,
he said there were symbols of diligence and kindness.
In the Budget there are provisions to ensure extra credit
mechanisms for them. Infrastructure relating to fishing was
being upgraded., he said.
He said modern fishing harbours will come up in five centres,
including Chennai.
Expressing optimism about seaweed farming, Mr Modi said this
will improve the lives of coastal communities.
''For seaweed cultivation, a multi-purpose sea-weed park will
come up in Tamil Nadu,'' he said.
Referring to the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, Mr.Modi said his
Government has always taken care of the welfare and
aspirations of the Tamil brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka.
''It is my honour to have been the only Indian Prime Minister
to visit Jaffna. Through development works we are ensuring
the welfare of Sri Lanka’s Tamil community'', he added.
The resources given by Indian government for Tamils have been
much more than in the past. The projects included, 50,000 houses
for displaced Tamils in North-Eastern Sri Lanka, 4,000 houses in
the plantation areas, Mr Modi said.
On the health side, India financed a free ambulance service
which was widely used by the Tamil community and a hospital
has been built in Dickoya.
To boost connectivity, the railway network to Jaffna and to
Mannar was being re-built and flights have been established
from Chennai to Jaffna.
''I feel happy to share that India has built the Jaffna Cultural
Centre which we hope to open soon'', he said.
''The issue of Tamil rights has also been taken up by us
consistently with Sri Lankan leaders. We are always committed
to ensuring that they live with equality, justice, peace and
dignity,'' he added.
