BHUBANESWAR: After roses and
chocolates, sharing a cake on Valentine’s Day seems to be the latest expression of affection among couples in the city.
Though vanilla and chocolate are the usual favourites, it was the
red velvet cake in the shape of a heart that had the maximum number of takers on the day of love. The red colour makes it all the more ideal for the day.
“Most of the orders I received for the red velvet cake were from middle-aged men and women, who wanted them for their spouses. It was heartening to realise that love has no age barrier,” Sweta Mishra, a home
baker, said.
Couples who want something more are opting for hampers that contain an assortment of bakery items. Another home baker, Abhipsa Pattnaik, has readied 40 hampers that contain heart cake-sickles, four chocolate strawberry cupcakes, one red velvet jar, assorted chocolates, five red velvet cookies, all beautifully packed in a basket.
“The red velvet jar has the cake in it and is supposed to be eaten with a spoon. It is a unique way to serve a cake and can be eaten on the go. Besides, people are fascinated to eat cake from a jar,” Abhipsa said. She has received orders from people in their 20s and newly-married couples.
Another favourite of the day is the Pinata cake. Priced at Rs 650 for 500 grams, the round-shaped cake has a flavoured liquid of choice at the centre. It has to be broke open with a hammer. “We are making it for the first time after learning about it from the internet and people are liking it,” Pradeep Kumar Ray, a city-based baker, said. He said orders usually start one or two days before the day from youngsters and middle-aged people.
Many people also want red velvet cakes with fondant cuttings or sprinklers of hearts, or the regular fruit cake covered with red gel. The other favourites being chocolate truffle and rasmalai cakes, and flower bouquets with chocolates for the occasion. The cherished red velvet cake is priced between Rs 450 and Rs 550 for 500 grams in different bakeries. After
Covid, this is the first time people are in a complete celebration mood.
