Gurgaon: Struggling to deal with the increasing complaints of financial fraud in the city, Gurgaon police are going to expand the economic offences wing (EOW). An additional EOW unit is being set up to speed up the investigation of such cases and will be operational from next week, police said.
The existing EOW is based at the police commissioner’s office building and is headed by an inspector-rank officer. The new unit will have its office at the Cyber police station building. On an average, the wing receives three fresh complaints daily. “The investigation of such cases takes time as it involves a lot of documents. As a result, the number of pending cases is increasing,” said a senior police officer.
Initially, EOW was flooded with complaints related to developers, as homebuyers approached police with complaints like delay in possession, unlawful escalation charges, non-payment of assured returns, increase in cost and changing and cancellation of booked units. Such complaints are now investigated by the Haryana Real Estate Regulatory Authority.
Gurgaon, being the financial capital of Haryana, has many companies and institutions. Moreover, property rates are very high here.
All this has led to a spurt in cases of financial and property frauds. “Over the years, such crimes have seen a rise, and there is a need to increase the manpower of EOW. For this we are creating an additional unit, which will be known as EOW-2,” said police commissioner K K Rao, adding that the unit will be headed by an inspector-rank officer.
Rao said that with the creation of the additional unit, the wing will be able to deal with a larger number of cases. Both wings will be headed by ACP (crime-2), who will directly report to DCP (headquarters).
