India had a middling first session as they aim to bounce back against England in the second of the four-match series after losing the first one comprehensively in Chennai. After opting to bat first India posted 106 runs in the first session before lunch but also lost three important wickets.
India had a poor start as they lost opener Shubman Gill in the second over for duck as England pacer Olly Stone trapped him in front of the wicket. Then Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara started rebuilding and forged a crucial partnership as the hosts staged a comeback after losing an early wicket.
Rohit played a counterattacking knock as he smashed the England bowlers around the park. The charismatic opener didn't look out in discomfort at any moment as he played his natural game. Pujara on the other end, played his natural game as he blocked and left before the spinners came in.
Pujara tried to take on the spinners from the word go as he started coming down the wicket to negate the turn. Rohit, thumped his way to a 47-ball fifty as he brought up his 12th Test half-century.
Pujara, however, couldn't stay for long as he poked indecisively at a Jack Leach delivery and it went straight into the hands of the slip fielder Ben Stokes. Pujara made 21.
It didn't take long for England to give India another blow, this time a massive one as skipper Virat Kohli missed the in spinning delivery as Moeen Ali extracted a massive turn off the track. Kohli got out for a duck, registering his 11th in the format.
However, Sharma continued his merry run and blasted his way to a 78-ball unbeaten 80 smashing 13 fours and a six as India finished the session on 106/3 and will be looking to build on his knock to take India to a fighting total in the second Test.
