IPL 2021: Difficult decision to opt out of auction, says Root

Chennai, Feb 12 (UNI) England captain Joe Root on Friday said the decision to opt out of IPL 2021 auction was a very difficult one and he made the call, considering the national team's packed schedule this year.
The biggest cricketing stars from around the world showcase their talent in the lucrative T-20 League. Not only Indian cricketers like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, but overseas legends like Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, Rashid Khan and Pat Cummins, also take part.
However, Joe Root has never featured in an IPL match till date and he opted against putting his name in the auction for the third time in a row now.
''It's a very difficult decision. I am desperate to be part of an IPL season and hopefully a few more beyond. With the amount of Test cricket in particular this year, didn't feel like it was the right time, didn't feel like I could throw all my energy into it, which I think it deserves,'' said Root.
''I don't think it would serve the English cricket best with what's to come… So, a very difficult decision. Hopefully next year, there's more of an opportunity to potentially be a part of the IPL, or at least be in the auction,'' he added.
Root also said that he has a desire to make it to England's squad for the T20 World Cup in India, which will take place this year.
''Absolutely, I would love to be a part of that World Cup squad, I love playing all three formats, everything is a different challenge,'' he said.
"I haven't had the opportunity to play a huge amount of T20 games in the last few years, but I am also aware of the guys who are playing some amazing cricket, they are brilliant players and fully deserve their chance. But if I get an opportunity, all I can do is try to score as many runs as I can when it comes to T20 games,'' he added.
BCCI on Thursday released a list of 292 players, who will go under the hammer at the IPL 2021 auction. The mini-auction will be held in Chennai on February 18.
