1k cams to keep eye on 84 crossings

Noida: The Noida Authority on Wednesday awarded the work of installation of intelligent traffic management system to a private agency, which will start work on the project soon.
Under the ambitious project, 84 crossings will be watched over with the help of 1,065 CCTV cameras.
Aimed at streamlining vehicular movement and strengthening electronic surveillance, the hi-tech system will be in place within nine months. The system will be run from the command and control room located in Sector 94 and will be monitored by police personnel round-the-clock.
While the Noida Authority had earmarked a budget of Rs 88.4 crore for the project, Afcon India Limited quoted the lowest amount and was willing to work on the project at a cost of Rs 64.4 crore.
As part of the project, an adaptive traffic light control system will be set up across 40 busy crossings. Speed detection system will be installed at 18 locations and variable message sign boards to disseminate traffic advisory and alerts will be placed at 22 points in the city.
Besides, it will also comprise automatic number plate recognition system, red light violation detection system, surveillance cameras and public announcement system. These features will be used strategically at key entry and exit points and at high-speed corridors.
SC Mishra, in-charge of the authority’s traffic cell, said, “Apart from minimising speeding, improving traffic situation and increased security cover, the features available under the project will also bring down the auto thefts. The number plate recognition system will alert the police control room (PCR) about the location of a stolen vehicle.”
Officials said that the system will be integrated with the e-challan system through which traffic violators will be identified and penalised within minutes of breaking the rules.
Authority had to tweak the terms and conditions of the tender in order to give a level-playing field to Indian companies interested in the project. Officials said that a domestic company has been given the responsibility to set up the system.
The agency will also operate and maintain the system for a period of five years after installing it.
