The Coweta County Board of Education approved a bid package from Meja Construction Company for an addition and modifications to Northgate High School at its meeting Tuesday.
The guaranteed maximum price for the project is $10,244,777.
Board member Amy Dees asked what the estimated time is for the classroom addition project at Northgate.
Superintendent Evan Horton said they would hopefully begin the project in the next couple of months. He said they would slate the new addition for occupancy in the fall of 2022.
“It’s about a 10 to 12 month project,” said Facilities Director Ronnie Cheek. “They plan to get started on it, to a certain degree, this spring. A lot of it we really can’t do until students are out this summer.”
Board member Buzz Glover asked how much additional capacity Northgate will have after the addition, and how many students will be redistricted once it’s complete.
Horton said the original redistricting plan was to redistrict 400 students from East Coweta to Northgate.
“That will bring Northgate’s population just over 2,100, in today’s numbers,” Horton said.
The board also approved a change order in the amount of $68,279 to replace the roof on the kitchen at Newnan Crossing Elementary School.
During ongoing renovations and modifications at the school to replace HVAC and lighting systems, it was discovered that the roof decking in the kitchen area was deteriorated due to previous roof leaks. Rooftop HVAC units in this area are scheduled to be replaced as part of the ongoing project.
The existing condition of the roof deck presented a potential safety hazard for maintenance and construction workers. Reroofing the area after installation of the HVAC units would present additional costs to roof the curb under the units.
Board member Andrew Copeland asked about the renovation schedule for the school, and if this is an issue the school system should’ve already found.
Cheek said the building is scheduled to be reroofed in the next phase of renovations. He said depending on cash flow, it’ll be at the end of this SPLOST cycle or the next cycle.
He said the roof over the kitchen at Newnan Crossing was put on during the original construction of the school in 1990.
In addition to the Northgate classroom addition project, other construction and improvement projects are continuing around the county.
Northgate renovations and modifications
Demolition is proceeding in phase three, building 100 South, as part of the renovations and modifications to Northgate High School.
Phase three is scheduled for completion during spring break. Project completion is scheduled for this summer.
Bottle filler replacements
All replacement water bottle fillers have been received by the contractor. Twenty percent of the units have been installed at schools around the district.
Installation of the remaining units should be completed this month.
Blake Bass Middle School
Installation of asphalt drives and parking lots is proceeding at Blake Bass Middle School as weather permits. Installation of skylight framing is complete.
Permanent power should be connected to the school this month. Installation of rooftop HVAC units is near completion.
“We are still on track for completion of that project July 7 of this year,” Horton said. “If you get a chance to go out there, it’s already beautiful, everyone. It’s going to be a really, really great facility.”
School renovations and modifications
Arnall Middle School, Jefferson Parkway, Thomas Crossroads and Newnan Crossing elementary schools will receive HVAC modifications, LED lighting replacements, ceiling replacements and replacement of fire alarm systems.
Relighting and ceiling replacements are proceeding at all locations. Installation of interior and exterior HVAC units is underway.
“We’re doing those projects as we can on weekends and holidays,” Horton said. “Those projects are progressing nicely, and we’re scheduled to complete those HVAC modifications at those schools this summer.”
