The Free State High Court sitting in Parys has sentenced three people for the murder of a taxi driver in 2019.

Karabo David Sefume, 30, was handed a 25-year sentence, Itumeleng Victor Mofokeng, 18, a 10-year sentence and Mohau Mthimkulu, 18, an eight-year sentence.

They were found guilty of the murder of a taxi driver in August 2019. At the time of the murder, two of the perpetrators were school pupils.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said:

It was on Wednesday, 21 August 2019, when the three suspects got into a taxi in Zamdela and during their ride they stabbed the taxi driver to death and fled the scene on foot. The suspects were later arrested and two of them were pupils at a local school.

During the trial, the court heard that the two pupils were on their way to school when Sefume suggested they hijack a taxi and sell it, Makhele said.

"After they got into the taxi, they demanded money from the driver and attempted to take the vehicle. Upon failing to get both the money and the vehicle, the suspects stabbed the driver to death," he added.
