New Delhi, Feb 12 (UNI) Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said that as many as 34,665 railway bridges in the country are 100 years old and their durability is tested at regular intervals.
Responding to a question during ‘Question Hour’ in the Rajya Sabha, he said the Indian Railways maintain over one lakh railway bridges in the country and regular inspections of these bridges are carried out regularly. Before the onset of Monsoon every year, all the bridges get inspected by the technicians, he added.
In last six years, he said, the Railways has focussed on the safety component in the entire network resulting in no major accidents in the last 22 months.
Mr Goyal also informed that the Railway Board has been reconstituted and a post of ‘Director General Safety’ created.
