A clash over the alleged distribution of liquor between workers of SAD and Congress late Tuesday night led to the death of two people in violence ahead of municipal elections in Moga.

A clash over alleged distribution of liquor between workers of SAD and Congress late Tuesday night led to the death of two people in violence ahead of municipal elections in Moga.
Narinderpal Singh, the husband of Congress candidate Paramjit Kaur from ward number 9, allegedly ran his vehicle over Harminder Singh (45) and Jagdeep Singh (60), both Akali workers, in the melee that ensued from the fight.

The clash broke out when Narinderpal, a former councillor, accused supporters of Kulwinder Kaur, the SAD candidate from ward 9, of distributing liquor.
While Harminder was declared brought dead at civil hospital, Jagdeep was referred to Ludhiana, where he succumbed to his injuries. Jagdeep was related to Akali candidate Kulwinder Kaur.

Akali leaders Barjinder Singh Brar and former mayor Akshit Jain accused Narinderpal and his supporters of threatening Akali workers and stopping them from campaigning. “The allegations of distributing liquor are false,” the two said. Later, former minister Tota Singh met Moga SSP Harmanbir Singh and demanded foolproof security for the candidates and supporters.

Moga Congress legislator Harjot Kamal called the incident “highly painful”, but added that “it was spontaneous and not pre-planned, as alleged by the Akalis”.
Moga deputy superintendent of police (City) Barjinder Singh Bhullar said a murder case was registered against nine people. Narinderpal, Jasmel Singh and Pamma Singh were arrested and two vehicles seized. Jaslovepreet Singh, the son of Congress candidate, was among those booked.

At the same time, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal said the Punjabis were paying a high price for the “goondaism let loose by the Congress even as the state election commission (SEC) has failed to ensure free and fair elections to municipal bodies”. He urged Punjab governor V P Singh Badnore to ensure more lives were not lost.

Elections to eight municipal corporations and 109 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in the state will be held on February 14. Even the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party have accused the Congress of violence campaigning.
The BJP candidates’ election offices were forced shut in Patiala district and the party blamed the Congress. The SAD blamed Congress also for the death of its two workers in Ferozepur.
