Aus Open 2021 Result: Ankita Raina on Thursday, who is the third Indian women to feature in the doubles event of the Australian in the main draw of a Grand Slam, has crashed out of the Australian Open 2021 in the opening round. She lost the match along with her partner Mihaela Buzarnecu 6-3, 6-0 in straight sets.
Ankita along with her Romanian partner Mihaela Buzarnecu had earned a direct entry for the doubles event. Only Sania Mirza and Nirupama Vaidyanathan have competed in the Grand Slam main draw for India before. The 28-year-old became only second Indian after six-time Grand Slam champion Sania to take part in the women’s doubles of a tennis major.
Nirupama was the first to crack a Grand Slam main draw, back in 1998 at the Australian Open
In another match, India’s Divij Sharan, I Zelenay lost 6-1, 6-4 to Germans Y Hanfmann and K Krawitz. The duo put an improved show in the second set but it was not their day as the Germans dominated the match.
On Wednesday, the other Indian in men’s doubles event, Rohan Bopanna and Japan’s Ben McLachlan bowed out in the opening round after a 4-6 6-7(0) defeat to the Korean wild card pair of Ji Sung Nam and Min-Kyu Song. The veteran still has a chance to make amends as he will partner China’s Yingying Duan in the mixed doubles and will be up against the pair of American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and United Kingdom’s Jamie Murray in the first round.
Earlier in men’s singles event, India’s ace tennis player Sumit Nagal had also competed in Aus Open 2021. He lost the match to Ricardas Berankis in the opening round clash.
