HYDERABAD: The new Mayor of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is Banjara Hills corporator Gadwala Vijaya Lakshmi.

The TRS bagged both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts for which elections were held in a special meeting of the GHMC on Thursday.

Only two nominations were filed for the Mayor elections. Vijaya Lakshmi from TRS and Radha Dheeraj Reddy from BJP contested as Mayor candidates. As the TRS candidate got more votes, the presiding officer declared that Vijaya Lakshmi was elected as Mayor.

Gadwal Vijaylakshmi (Corporator TRS Banjara Hills Division - 93) is the daughter of TRS secretary-general and MP K Keshava Rao.

Vijaya Lakshmi is a law graduate. She lived in the US for two decades and worked as a research assistant in Duke University there.

She was elected as corporator for the first time in 2016 from Banjara Hills division.

Meanwhile, Tarnaka Division TRS corporator M Srilatha was elected as Deputy Mayor.
