A 46-year-old man died after being shot in the head in Hout Bay, Cape Town on Thursday morning.

The victim was shot in the head in Atlantic Skipper Road, Hangberg, and later died of his wounds, police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said.

"... Hout Bay police attended to a complaint of a shooting in progress near a primary school, and on arrival found the victim lying on the pavement with a wound to his forehead. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died due to the injury sustained," Van Wyk said.

The victim is understood to have had links with the underworld and two well-placed sources in law enforcement identified him as Simon Mather. Van Wyk had not confirmed the identity at the time of publication.

The suspects were still at large, Van Wyk added.

"The police urge anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect/s to contact the investigating officer Detective Captain Zola John Gatyana on 082 469 2576, the office on 021 791 8660 or alternatively Crime Stop on 08600 10111," he said.
