New Delhi: German Carrier Lufthansa terminated 103 Indian cabin crew members, as COVID impacts airlines across the globe, affected employee told ET.
“...has terminated the services of its 103 Indian Flight Attendants on Fixed Term Contracts based in Delhi overnight sighting Covid Pandemic. These terminations happened overnight without giving any prior notice. Some of these terminated people had been employed for nearly 15 years,” an affected employee told ET.
No such terminations have happened in Germany or worldwide till date, she added.
The employees said that the company has terminated 103 employees but decided to keep 32 cabin crew members.
The employees also said that they have been paid only a month’s salary as severance package.
Some of the laid off employees are planning a protest at Delhi Airport’s Aerocity on Friday.
Notably, these Indian cabin crew members were hired as part of Lufthansa’s ‘more Indian than you think’ campaign, where the airline advertised its services to attract Indian fliers.
The campaign did work for the airline and the airline was, before COVId impacted travel across the globe, one of the largest international airline in and out of India.
The airline, which operated 56 weekly flights between Germany and India, now operates only 10 weekly flights.
The airline could not be immediately contacted for the story. An email sent to the company’s PR team did not elicit any immediate response.
