Markets close higher driven by metal, oil stocks; Sensex tops 220 pts, Nifty 50 up 15,170; Heavyweight RIL top gainer

On a broader market term, BSE SmallCap index outperformed Sensex.

The Indian markets closed on a bullish note on Thursday after a lacklustre session. Both Sensex and Nifty picked up pace as investors tapped metal, oil and energy stocks. Also, small-caps outperformed. Meanwhile, heavyweight Reliance Industries (RIL) also lifted the performance.

Sensex closed at 51,531.52 up 222.13 points or 0.43%. The index has touched an intraday high and low of 51,592.45 and 51,157.31.

Similarly, Nifty 50 also recorded significant gains, ending at 51,157.31 higher by 66.80 points or 0.44%. The index clocked an intraday high and low of 15,188.50 and 15,065.40 in the session.

RIL stock emerged top gainer on Sensex skyrocketing by 4% followed by Sun Pharma up 3%. Bajaj Finance and Power Grid also made substantial gains by around 2% each. Other heavyweights like Bharti Airtel, Nestle, HUL,  HCL Tech and Tech Mahindra climbed over 1% each.

However, on Sensex, underperformers list included Titan down 2.5% followed by L&T lower by 1.4%. Stocks like HDFC Bank, ITC, ONGC and SBI dipped between 0.5-1%.

At sectoral indices basis, BSE Oil & Gas emerged top pick soaring by 225 points, while BSE Metal and BSE Energy also advanced over 130 points and 190 points respectively.

On a broader market term, BSE SmallCap outperformed Sensex. The index jumped by 205 points or 1.06%, closing at 19,626.01.
