Five of village committee booked for stoppage of drinking water to hamlet

Thane, Feb 10 (UNI) The Rural Police have registered a case against a group of five members of a village committee for alleged stoppage of drinking water to the Katkari locality of Kushivali at Dhabad in Bhiwandi taluka of the district.
An offence under sections of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was registered with the Padgha police on Tuesday against the alleged accused.
Among the five accused are four women, police said.
The members of the village committee were collecting water cess of Rs 100 from each member of the Katkari pada for years.
But suddenly, they made a demand of Rs 500 from the members of the Pada who when expressed their inability to make the payment of the increased amount, the members of the village committee disconnected the supply of water to the pada, it was stated.
As a result, the villagers had to go without water for two days, thereafter they filed the complaint with the police against the members of the village committee.
No arrest has been made so far in this connection, sources said and added further probe was underway.
