MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday adjourned till February 15 the hearing on the bail plea of former Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) chief executive Partho Dasgupta, to allow him time to withdraw his plea from the Supreme Court of India. Dasgupta is an accused in the alleged television rating point (TRP) manipulation scam.
Before the adjournment, special public prosecutor Shishir Hire, while opposing the bail plea, argued that Dasgupta had filed a bail plea in the Supreme Court as well and this move was nothing but “forum shopping”.
Countering that senior counsel Abad Ponda, appearing for Dasgupta, told the court that they had already moved the praecipe before the apex court to withdraw that application and would withdraw the plea on February 12.
Justice Prakash D Naik, after hearing the arguments, allowed time to Dasgupta to withdraw his plea from the Supreme Court.
Dasgupta was arrested by the crime branch of the Mumbai Police on December 24. He is accused of misusing his official position to manipulate TRPs.
Sessions court judge MA Bhosale, while rejecting his bail plea, recorded in his order that though other accused people were out on bail, Dasgupta’s custodial interrogation was required since as per the case papers, he seemed to be the “mastermind” of the case.
