Puducherry's Yanam region is now Covid-19 infection-free

PUDUCHERRY: Yanam, Puducherry's enclave in Andhra Pradesh, became a Covid-19 infection-free region in the Union territory after the lone patient undergoing treatment in a hospital recovered and discharged and no fresh case was reported in the last 24 hours as of 10am on Wednesday.
Yanam is the first region to become Covid-free in the territory. Yanam reported 2,120 cases of which 2,075 patients recovered while 45 patients died.
The number of active cases in the Union territory dropped below 300-mark after the territory reported 19 fresh cases and 32 patients recovered in the last 24 hours as of 10am on Wednesday. Presently, there are 293 active cases. Of the 293 cases, 167 are under home isolation and treatment. Puducherry headquarters has the maximum active case with 178 followed by Mahe (72) and Karaikal (43).
A 71-year-old man with cancer and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), who underwent nephroureterectomy, died of Covid-19 taking the death toll to 656. Puducherry headquarters has the maximum fatalities with 535 followed by Karaikal (66), Yanam (45) and Mahe (10). The fatality rate of infection stood at 1.7%.
The territory has so far reported 39,372 cases of which 38,423 patients recovered registering a recovery rate of 97.6%.
Healthcare authorities have so far sent 5.96 lakh swab samples for testing of which 5.52 lakh samples returned negative. The positivity rate of the samples (2,707) tested on Wednesday stood at 0.7%.
The Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services has so far administered Covid-19 vaccine to 4,370 healthcare and frontline workers in the Union territory. The directorate administered the vaccine to 383 healthcare workers and 37 frontline workers on Wednesday taking the tally to 4,257 healthcare workers and 113 frontline workers.
