Patient’s kin complain after his death at hospital, probe ordered

Ghaziabad: A family from Vasundhara has sought a high-level inquiry into the death of a 48-year-old man during treatment at a private Covid hospital in Vaishali last year.
In a letter dated December 8, 2020 to the Ghaziabad chief medical officer, the complainant said his brother-in-law had gone to the hospital’s OPD on November 16 to get treatment for cough and fever. He was advised to undergo a Covid-19 test through rapid antigen kit, even after informing that he had already given his samples for both RT-PCR and antigen tests at a government lab just half an hour ago.
Soon after the test at the hospital, the patient was told that he had tested positive and needed to be admitted. “At this point, my brother-in-law became nervous. He was told that a separate room will be given to him for isolation as per Covid protocol,” the complainant wrote.
He alleged that shortly after admission, the hospital staff informed that his relative had suffered a mild heart attack and that it was not possible to shift him to another centre. After some time, they were told he had died. His daughter and wife were not allowed to go near him and the hospital pressed for early cremation, said the complainant.
He also attached Covid reports from the government labs that stated that the patient had tested negative for the virus.
A probe has been ordered, with the Meerut zone additional director being appointed as the investigating officer. A letter by UP joint secretary Aziz Ahmed was sent to DG, medical and health services, seeking a report.
