A BSP leader and a local farmer died by suicide after accusing the authorities of corruption in Uttar Pradesh, Budaun. Harveer, in his suicide note, has made allegations of harassment and corruption against sub-divisional magistrates (SDM) and revenue officers.
Harveer was from the Dalit community and often went to Sahaswan Tehsil. He went to tehsil 2 times on Saturday before consuming poison. After consuming poison, he came home and informed his family about it. He was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment, but his life could not be saved.
In his suicide note, he alleged that officer Omkar had demanded Rs 50,000 for the renewal of the plot which was allotted to him and that SDM Kishore Gupta had abused and threatened him.
According to the family members of Harveer Singh, he was the tehsil head of the BSP and a resident of Rasoolpur Dhaka village, Uttar Pradesh.
Taking cognizance of the incident, Budaun District Magistrate Kumar Prashant has suspended Kanungo and directed the ADM to investigate. No action has been taken against the SDM so far.
Jaiveer Singh, the brother of the deceased, said in a complaint, “A strip of land was allotted to Harveer (for agriculture purpose) in 2006. The allotment was to be renewed after every four years. Harveer had to make rounds of the tehsil office for renewal, and the SDM and Kanungo had demanded Rs 50,000 as a bribe for it.”
In the case, SSP Sankalp Sharma said, “As per the law, an FIR cannot be lodged against the government official directly in such a case. Kanungo has been suspended by the district magistrate for being found guilty. ADM is investigating. The family has been promised compensation under a government scheme. “
