MP wants Lok Sabha to discuss move to install energy systems on Palk Bay islands by Chinese firm

Lok Sabha
VILLUPURAM: Villupuram MP D Ravikumar urged the Lok Sabha secretary general to adjourn house proceedings to discuss the Sri Lankan government's proposal to install hybrid renewable energy systems on three islands in the Palk Bay, which is closer to the Indian territory (50km to Tamil Nadu coast)..
Ravikumar said the Sri Lankan government gave approval to a Chinese-based joint venture firm Sinosoar-Ethechwin to install the renewable energy systems at Nainativu, Neduntheevu (Delft Island) and Analaitivu in January this year.
He said the project, if allowed, would become a huge threat to India's security.
The Sri Lankan government-owned Ceylon Electricity Board has launched an electricity supply reliability improvement project to integrate renewable energy into the transmission and distribution segment. The Chinese joint venture firm will install wind power projects generating 1,700KW and solar power projects generating 530MW and connect them to the national grid. The Asian Development Bank funds the project.
