CHENNAI: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the Tamil Nadu government to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of a man who died after being tortured by the Sivaganga district police in June 2013.
The deceased man, Kumar alias Kokki Kumar of Avarangadu near Tirupachethi, was involved in the murder of sub-inspector Alwin Sudhan, according to the police.
Kokki Kumar was a close friend of M Prabhu and Bharathi, the two other accused in the Alwin Sudhan murder case, who were gunned down by police on November 30, 2012.
Sub-inspector Alwin Sudhan was killed in the attack on policemen during Maruthupandiar Jayanthi on October 27, 2012. As many as 13 people were arrested within a fortnight of the murder
The police maintained that Kumar had developed health complications after his arrest and he had been declared dead on arrival in Government Rajaji hospital, Madurai.
After perusing the submissions, the commission held that there was human rights violation and directed the government to recover the compensation from the five police personnel including DSP Velladurai.
The commission also recommended disciplinary action against police officials.
