MADURAI: A 25-year-old woman in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu killed her two children by setting them on fire before self-immolating.
The deceased have been identified as V Karthigaiselvi, 25, of Paravai near Samayanallur and her children V Thageswaran, 2, and V Kavidarshini, 3.
According to police, Karthigaiselvi's husband, Velmurugan, worked in Paravai vegetable market as a load man. The couple quarrelled often over petty issues.
Recently, they received an invitation from a relative to a function. Karthigaiselvi asked Velmurugan for some money to attend the function. Velmurugan did not give the amount she asked for and left for work early on Tuesday morning.
Following this, Karthigaiselvi doused her children in kerosene and set them on fire before setting herself ablaze.
Though relatives rushed to the house on hearing the screams, they could not rescue the trio as the house was locked from inside.
Fire and rescue team reached the house and broke open the doors. They were rushed to a hospital, where the doctors declared them as “dead on arrival.”
The Samayanallur police initiated an inquiry.
