A prominent conservative lawyer has trashed Donald Trump's defence that trying him for impeachment is unconstitutional, just hours before his trial begins.

Charles J Cooper, who is one of the top conservative constitutional lawyers, said on Sunday evening that Donald Trump can be tried for impeachment despite no longer being US president.

This went against arguments made by top Republicans and Mr Trump's lawyers over the last month, who claimed that it is unconstitutional to try Mr Trump, as the penalty for impeachment conviction is being removed from office.

However, writing in The Wall Street Journal, Mr Cooper said that the Republican officials were misreading the constitution, and added: “It defies logic to suggest that the Senate is prohibited from trying and convicting former officeholders.”
