Tamil Nadu: Former Union minister detained for taking part in bike rally

KANYAKUMARI: Former Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan (BJP) was among the 67 persons arrested by the district police, Monday for trying to take part in a two-wheeler rally despite the denial of permission by the police. They were taken to a marriage hall and released at around 7.30 pm.
The former minister and others tried to participate in a rally from Thanumalayaswamy temple in Suchindram to Kottar through North Thamaraikulam, Swamithoppu, South Thamaraikulam to create awareness on the achievements of the union government, for which the police had denied permission.
A police officer said the reason for denail of permission is that the union government permits protests and not rallies as part of its phased unlock. Radhakrishnan and other party members tried to take out the two-wheeler rally despite the warning, due to which they were detained at 5.45 pm and taken to a marriage hall.
They were booked under sections 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code and The Epidemic Disease Act.
