Imphal, Feb 8 (UNI) Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday presented cash reward of Rs 10 lakh to Peh (Paoyi) village authority of Ukhrul district, for destroying poppy plantation.
Lauding the villagers for their resolve to destroy the poppy plantation, Mr Singh, during a function held at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, said that the state government has been putting in best possible efforts to curb drug abuse and trafficking.
He assured that a market shed with an estimated cost of around Rs 10 lakh and a Primary Health Centre would be constructed in the village soon.
Apart from this, a water supply scheme would also be constructed under the Jal Jeevan Mission, said Mr Singh.
The Chief Minister further said that the government would consider the development of a cultural heritage site, as suggested by the villagers.
Stating that the government was ready to provide assistance to villagers seeking alternative to poppy plantation, the Mr Singh asked the villagers to consult the concerned officials regarding the suitability of other crops in their village.
He also urged them to create awareness on the government's War on Drugs Campaign to their neighbouring villages.
Appreciating the government's decision to reward them, the Paoyi villagers assured that they would extend full support and co-operation to the government's ongoing War on Drugs Campaign.
The organisations, which interacted with the Chief Minister, included Peh Village Council, Peh Village Court, Peh Youth Organisation and Peh Shanao Long.
MLA Khasim Vashum, among others, was present during the meeting.
