Twitter Public Policy head Mahima Kaul resigns, #MahimaPleaseDontGo trends

India’s Public policy head of Twitter Mahima Kaul has resigned from her post as the Head, Public Policy & Government Partnerships, India, Twitter, citing personal reasons.

Mahima Kaul had put down her papers in January and will continue to work with the company till March to help with the smooth transitioning, as per the statement.

As the news of her putting down her papers went viral, hashtag #MahimaPleaseDontGo has gone viral and is trending at number one position in India. To this, Twitter Global Policy Head Monique Meche said in her statement- “It’s a loss for all of us at Twitter, but after more than five years in the role we respect her desire to focus on the most important people and relationships in her personal life. Mahima will continue in her role till the end of March and will support the transition,”

However, media reports and sources suggest that the reason for her resigning from the post has nothing to do with the recent incident, in which the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) had directed Twitter to block tweets, and also user accounts, related to farmer protests after pop singer Rihanna commented on it, and it led to a global spat.

During the past few days, teh farmer protests which had been going on for several months came into limelight after the violent spur on Republic Day when the peaceful tractor rally and farmer protest turned into a violent attack from both sides.

To this, Twitter was directed to remove tweets and suspend accounts who were using hashtag ‘ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide’. Twitter then decided to lift the block after this move by the company triggered a backlash. The block lasted for five to six hours.

But as per reports, Mahima Kaul had decided to resign much before the government warning was issued. She is parting ways after spending more than 5 years with the company to take some time off.
