Modi govt trampling interests, rights of farmers: Anwar

Patna, Feb 8 (UNI) Accusing the Narendra Modi-led NDA government of trampling the interests and rights of farmers by enforcing 'anti farmer' Agriculture reforms laws, the Congress on Monday demanded repealing of the same, without further loss of time.
General Secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) Tarique Anwar told media persons here that instead of helping farmers, the Narendra Modi government was taking several steps, one after the other, that would deprive the farmers of their rights of getting due price of their produce.
Under the new agriculture reform laws, the ryots would lose their rights of knocking the door of court in the event of any injustice meted out to them, he pointed out.
''The biggest problem of the country today is the ongoing farmers' agitation and the Narendra Modi government should withdraw the three enforced Agriculture reforms laws by accepting their demands, without making it a prestige issue,'' said the Congress leader.
He added that instead of trying to find out an amicable solution, the government had snapped power and water supply to the farmers staging dharna in support of their demands near the Delhi border.
It was all the more pathetic to note that sharp knells were planted and barbed wire were placed to block the path of agitating peasants, he noted.
Mr Anwar said the provision of payment of Minimum Support Price (MSP) to farmers against the procurement of their produce should be given legal status.
What was the difficulty for the Centre to announce legal guarantee to MSP, as being demanded by farmers, he asked.
