MUMBAI: To enhance safety of passengers, DRM of Western Railway has started a kiosk with facility to sanitise and wrap passenger's luggage at Mumbai Central station.
The new system was inaugurated by WR divisional railway manager GVL Satya Kumar, who said this service will start at Bandra Terminus and Surat Railway station shortly.
WR chief spokesperson Sumit Thakur said, "The sanitisation will be done by passing luggage through the UV rays tunnel. UV rays sanitisation kills the pathogen residing on the surface of the luggage which limits the chance of spread of Covid-19 and other infectious diseases. It is a dry and quick method, which is more convenient than traditional spraying method."
As an inaugural offer, rates for sanitisation will be Rs 10 for each baggage while sanitisation and wrapping both will cost Rs 50, he stated.
The passenger will also have the option of wrapping the luggage with polythene cover. "In future, we have plans to replace wrapping material from polythene to biodegradable polymer, which shall be eco-friendly," Thakur added.
This project will fetch non fare revenue of Rs 18.2 lakh per annum to the Mumbai Central division.
