Kolkata, Feb 7 (UNI) West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday was saddened to hear the passing away for former Davis Cup player Akhatar Ali at his central Kolkata residence.
Akhtar Ali, who represented India between 1958-1964 in the international circuits, died at his central Kolkata residence early on Sunday. He was 81.
" Saddened to hear about the passing of Akhtar Ali, a true tennis legend," Ms Banerjee said in her condolence message.
" ‘Akhtar Sir' coached many of India’s tennis champions. We conferred Bengal’s highest sporting award on him in 2015.
I was fortunate to always receive his warm affection. Condolences to his family and admirers," said the chief minister.
