Glacier breaks off in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, causing flash flood in Dhauli Ganga

NEW DELHI: A glacier burst in Raini area of Chamoli in Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand on Sunday caused a flash flood endangering the life of people living near the river bank. The flood of water has reportedly caused damaged to the hydropower plant nearby.
As per initial reports, the Tapovan- Vishnugad hydropower plant seems to have been compromised amidst a flood of water seen gushing down the Ganga river. Authorities have sounded a high alert from Chamoli to Haridwar.
Reports suggest that there has been heavy damage due to the breaking of the Tapovan- Vishnugad dam and a few people are also believed to have drowned although a clear picture is yet to emerge.
Several labourers working at the Rishi Ganga hydroelectric power project are feared missing.
Meanwhile, officials said that settlements near the river banks from Chamoli till Rishikesh and Haridwar are being cleared. Teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are reaching the area to take stock of the damage.
Chief minister Trivendra Rawat is also expected to make an aerial survey shortly.
