Aus Open 2021: The World No.2 Rafael Nadal on Saturday eased fears of a back injury saying that it will not prevent him from competing for the record 21st Grand Slam title in men’s singles at Aus Open 2021. The Spanish legend took to the John Cain Arena and looked in complete control hammering the balls across the net with tremendous power.
The doubts about him playing in the Australian Open began when he pulled out of Spain’s ATP Cup tie after a lower back problem on Tuesday. Later in the course, he was still far away from his best that is required for the first Grand Slam of 2021.
The Aus Open 2021 director Craig Tiley said Nadal is “out practising and he’s indicated he’ll be ready,” as quoted by Reuters.
“He’s protecting his opportunity to win a 21st grand slam,” he added.
Nadal, who has record equal Grand Slam in men’s tennis with Roger Federer, has suffered from injuries in his entire carrier. He rarely plays competitive fixtures ahead of Grand Slams.
The Spanish Tennis maestro added that during 14 days quarantine period in Adeline, he could only train for 2.5 out of 5 hours that was allowed under health protocols.
If he can overcome the World No.1 Novak Djokovic (Defending Aus Open champion), he could be the first to win the maximum number of singles title in the history of men’s Tennis. His rival Federer has pulled himself out of the tournament and will make his comeback in March 2021. It is a perfect opportunity for the Spaniard to surpass the GOAT.
The King of Clay Nadal has only managed one Australian Open title in his career. He would like to improve his tally in terms of Grand Slams victories. In French Open, he has record 13 titles, most by any player in the open era.
