Major reshuffle in Kolkata, Bengal police prior to polls

KOLKATA: In a major reshuffle in the higher echelons of both West Bengal Police and Kolkata Police prior to the state assembly polls, police commissioners of Kolkata, Bidhannagar, Howrah and Barrackpore were transferred out of their current positions.
Soumen Mitra, who had earlier held the position of the city police chief five years ago, prior to the 2016 state assembly polls, has been placed as the new commissioner of Kolkata Police while Supratim Sarkar has been made the commissioner of Bidhannagar City Police.
Currently, Mitra and Sarkar hold the posts of ADG IG (training) and additional CP-II respectively. They would replace Anuj Sharma in Kolkata and Mukesh Kumar in Bidhannagar who will take over as ADG IG (CID) and DIG Barasat range respectively.

Howrah and Barackpore police commissioners Kunal Aggarwal and Manoj Verma were also transferred from their current positions to serve as DIG Barasat range and IG CIF respectively.
C Sudhakar and Ajay Kumar Nand will take over as commissioner of Howrah and Barrackpore respectively, the notification released by the home and hill affairs department, Govt of West Bengal stated.
In another major change, Gyanwant Singh was removed from the position of ADG and IG law and order and was transferred as ADG IG Armed police. Jawed Shamim, who is currently positioned as Special CP I of Kolkata Police will take over as ADG and IG Law and order.
The Election Commission had stipulated no officer should be in the same post for more than three years during polls. In the last month and a half, over 450 police officers have been transferred across the state.
The EC, before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, had transferred KP commissioner Anuj Sharma (and replaced him with Rajesh Kumar) and Bidhannagar Police commissioner Gyanwant Singh (and replaced him with NR Babu).
The Bengal government brought back Sharma to his old post and made Singh the state additional director-general (law and order) after the polls.
