
Three men have been arrested after a shootout with police in the town of Mpumalanga in KwaZulu-Natal.
On Wednesday, a motorist was approached by two armed men in Mngadi Road, said police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala.
"At gunpoint, the suspects forced her out of the vehicle and they drove off with the vehicle. A case of carjacking was opened at Mpumalanga SAPS. The police officers from Mpumalanga SAPS assisted by Tracker patrolled the area, searching for the hijacked vehicle and the suspects," Gwala said.
The hijacked vehicle and three occupants were spotted in Sibisi Road.
"Upon seeing the police officers, the suspects fired shots at the police officers and there was a shootout. The vehicle was then intercepted and three men, aged between 20 and 37, were placed under arrest. A 9mm pistol was recovered from the suspects," Gwala said.
The men are expected to appear before the Hammarsdale Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of carjacking, illegal possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen vehicle.
