Top JeM OGW, deported from Qatar, arrested at Delhi airport: J&K Police

Srinagar, Feb 5 (UNI) A top Over Ground Worker (OGW) of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), who was deported from Qatar, was on Friday arrested by J&K police at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, a police spokesperson said here.

He said the top OGW, who was wanted in many militancy related cases, was deported to India from Qatar on Friday. “The OGW has been identified as Munib Ahmad Sofi, a resident of Bijbehara in south Kashmir district of Anantnag,” he said.

He said that Kulgam police on Friday took Sofi into its custody at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.

He said as per police records, Sofi was involved in case FIR No 58/2020 u/s 13,18,19,38,39 ULA (P) of PS Devsar regarding collection of funds for militant outfit JeM. “During the course of investigation, one OGW was arrested who revealed that he along with other associates were collecting money from various districts in Kashmir valley JeM,” he said.

He said thereafter the collected amount was handed over to Sofi, who was staying in Qatar and was in contact with a Pakistan based militant, identified as Waleed Bhai, for purchasing of arms and ammunition from Pakistan. “Waleed Bhai was killed in an encounter with security forces at Kulgam last year,” he said.

Accordingly, he said a look out notice was issued against Sofi and a non-bailable warrant under section 25 Police Act was obtained from the concerned court. “Consequent upon the deportation of the accused from Qatar to India, he was arrested at IGI Airport New Delhi,” he said, adding further investigation is in progress.
