Myanmar military staged a bloodless coup in the early hours of February 1 and detained de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and imposed a one-year state of emergency. A 10-year experiment with the democratic system came to a halt after the coup. The military justified its power grab by alleging fraud in the November elections that Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party won in a landslide.
