CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu assembly on Friday passed the Dr J Jayalalithaa University Bill 2021 to establish a new university. The Bill would give effect to chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s announcement on September 16 last year that Thiruvalluvar University would be bifurcated and a new university would be established in Villupuram.
The new university will start functioning from this academic year.
The university would have its headquarters in Villupuram municipality or within a radius of 25 km. It would have powers in the university area comprising Villupuram, Cuddalore and Kallakurichi districts.
The colleges in Villupuram, Cuddalore and Kallakurichi would be disaffiliated from Thiruvalluvar University and transferred to the newly established university.
