Covid-19: South Africa's cases increase by 3 751 and deaths by 261

South Africa recorded 3 751 new Covid-19 infections by Thursday, along with 261 new Covid-19-related deaths, taking the confirmed death toll to 45 605.

According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, as of Thursday, the country recorded a total of 1 466 767 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

Gauteng remains the most affected province with 26.7% of the total confirmed cases, which translates to 391 798 cases.

KwaZulu-Natal has recorded 318 797 confirmed cases to date, the Western Cape 271 187 cases and the Eastern Cape 192 467 cases.

South Africa recorded 3 751 new Covid-19 infections by Thursday.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most confirmed active cases with 42 016, followed by the Western Cape with 12 631 and Gauteng with 9 115.

The recovery rate is 90.5%, with 1 327 186 recoveries recorded.

To date, 8 400 319 tests have been completed, with 31 032 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, Mkhize said.

Mkhize also reported a further 261 confirmed Covid-19-related deaths, of which 56 were recorded in KwaZulu-Natal, 53 in Gauteng, 44 in the Eastern Cape, 42 in North West, 41 in the Western Cape, 12 in the Free State, 11 in Limpopo and two in the Northern Cape.

This brings the total to 45 605 deaths.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.
