Residents told to evacuate as bushfire rages near Hervey Bay

Firefighters have urged Fraser Coast residents to evacuate as an out-of-control bushfire threatens homes on Thursday afternoon.

The bushfire is burning north of Susan River, on the outskirts on Hervey Bay, in the vicinity of Baxters Road and Black Swamp Creek.

Firefighters warn people in the area will be affected by smoke, which will reduce visibility and air quality. (File image)Credit:QFES Media

The flames were expected to affect Sunshine Acres along the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road, as well as Corella Way, Honeyeater Drive and Finch Court in the nearby suburb of Walligan.

“Residents on the eastern side of the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road should evacuate east along the Booral Road towards Booral,” Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said.

“Residents on the western side of the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road should evacuate west along the Howard-Torbanlea road towards Howard.

“Fire crews are working to contain the fire but firefighters may not be able to protect every property. You should not expect a firefighter at your door.

“The fire could have a significant impact on the community.”
