Youth dies, 10 hurt as quarry caves in

A 26-year-old man died, while 10 others suffered injuries after a stone quarry caved in while the workers were breaking stones with explosives near Uthiramerur in Kancheepuram on Thursday.

Chennai:
The private quarry in Thirumukkudal village near Uthiramerur was functioning without following proper rules, police said.
On Thursday morning, as usual, the workers were breaking the stones using explosives and loading them on trucks. Suddenly, a huge rock from other side of the quarry caved in. 
The workers tried to escape from the spot but most of them were trapped between falling boulders, police said.
Police sources said B Manikandan from Salem, an earthmover operator, died on the spot while Sona Hansari and Suresh suffered severe injuries. 
The revenue officials and the police who arrived at the spot admitted the injured workers to the hospital while the body of the deceased was sent for post-mortem. Police said a few earthmovers and lorries were also trapped under the boulders.
Police sources said the condition of Sona and Suresh, admitted in the GH, is critical. 
The locals and the families of the workers, meanwhile, protested the lack of safety protocol at the quarry. 
Kancheepuram Collector Mageswari Ravikumar visited the quarry site and the engineers from the Mines department would test the stability of the rocks. She said the quarry was functioning with proper permission but if safety measurements are violated then action will be taken. 
The Uthiramerur police have registered a case and are questioning the supervisor.
