Hyderabad: The Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) is likely to be extended to all levels of the School Education i.e., from preparatory to Class XII. Accordingly, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has constituted a committee to develop TET guidelines/structure/test components.

Presently, the TET is being conducted in two papers – paper-I and II and candidates who wish to be teachers for Classes I to V have to appear for paper-I, while those for classes VI-VIII have to take paper-II. Candidates who intend to be teachers for all classes (I-VIII) should appear for both papers.

“The NEP 2020 enacts numerous changes in India’s teacher education sector. Under the reference of task no. 145 of the Ministry of Education letter dated October 23, 2020, the NCTE has therefore, constituted a committee to develop a comprehensive TET guidelines/structure/test components etc., to extend TET to all levels of the School Education from Preparatory to Grade 12 aligned with NEP 2020 on or before March 31, 2021,” said the NCTE in a letter sent to the State governments on Wednesday.

The Committee was asked to study implementation of the TET guidelines issued by the NCTE, candidate wise, question wise data for psychometric analysis, problems being faced in holding TET by the State governments/UTs and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Accordingly, the NCTE has sought information and statistics related to the TET conducted by the State governments and CBSE by February 15. Details that were sought include conduct of TET, a copy of question paper (paper-I and II) for last three TETs, profile of question paper setter and examiners, method of conducting TET/evaluation (CBT/OMR/other), number of candidates in the academic year (appeared and passed), total number of BEd, DElEd, and MEd candidates appeared and passed. The States were also asked to furnish details of candidates who do not possess teacher education certificate/professional qualification.

The NCTE had recently extended the validity of TET score for a lifetime from earlier validity of seven years.

The TET was conducted across the State in July 2017 for which a total of 3,29,786 including 98,905 candidates for paper-I and 2,30,881 for paper-II have appeared. As many as 57.37 per cent candidates have qualified in the paper-I whereas 19.51 per cent have cleared the paper-II.

In the Teacher Recruitment Test for filling up vacancies in the government run schools, 20 per cent weightage is given to TET score whereas TET is mandatory for teaching in the private schools.
