GATE 2021 Exam Day Guidelines, Timings & Other Details

The seven Indian Institutes of Technology, i.e., IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) jointly conduct and administer the GATE Exam.
While the Organizing Institute in 2020 was IIT Delhi, the Organizing Institute for GATE 2021 is IIT Bombay, which is responsible for the end-to-end coordination amongst all the Institutes that administer. All the GATE exam-related operations are managed by a GATE Office in IISc. and IITs.

Important details and timings related to GATE 2021:
- Conducted as a Computer Based Test.
- Dates of examination: The exam will be conducted on multiple days i.e., on February 5th, 6th, 7th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 2021. It will be conducted over two sessions on each exam day i.e., morning and afternoon.
- Timing for morning shift will be 9:30 AM -12:30 PM & for evening shift will be 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
- There are 27 subject papers and two new subjects have been introduced in GATE 2021.
- Environmental Science and Engineering (ES)
- Humanities and Social Sciences in Economics / English / Linguistics / Philosophy / Psychology / Sociology. (XH)
- GATE 2021 test papers will be objective type comprising of these patterns: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ),
- Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and/or Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
- The number of subject papers that are allowed is One or Two. From a given list of combinations of papers, Two Paper combinations will be selected. According to the availability of dates and infrastructure, the final allotment of TWO papers will take place.
- There is a relaxed eligibility criterion. Candidates who have already completed any Government approved degree program in Science/ Commerce/ Arts/ Engineering/ Technology or currently studying in 3rd year or higher of any UG Program are eligible to appear for the GATE 2021 exam.
- To appear in the GATE 2021 exam, there is NO age limit.
- The validity of the GATE 2021 score is THREE years from the announcement date of results.

GATE 2021: Exam Day Guidelines
- Candidates are advised to reach 60 minutes prior to their exam centres for smooth and proper photo ID verification.
- Admit card is a mandatory document to be carried along with to appear for the GATE 2021 Exam, no candidate will be allowed to appear for the exam without GATE 2021 Admit card.
- Take the printout of the GATE 2021 Admit card on the A4 Size Sheet only.
- It is mandatory to carry one Original Photo ID along with a GATE 2021 Admit card.
- No electronic items like a watch, personal calculators, etc are not allowed in the Examination Hall.
- If any candidate is found with any prohibited item during the examination, then the candidate will be himself/herself responsible for any disciplinary action taken against him/her.
- Avoid carrying any valuable items to the exam centres.
- Candidates can take their seats 45 minutes before the start of the exam and during that time they can read the instructions carefully.
- Entry into the examination hall after 9:30 will not be allowed and no one can leave the hall before the end of the examination.
- Candidates will be provided with a virtual or on-screen calculator for numerical calculations. So, they are not supposed to carry their own calculators.
- Management will provide rough sheets for calculations.
- Candidates are advised to keep a copy of the admit card for future reference.
Other Instructions:
- Candidates must stand in queues and follow floor marks while entering or standing at the entrance gate.
- Any candidate with a body temperature above 99.4 degrees Fahrenheit will have to give an exam in the Covid Isolation area built within GATE 2021 Exam centres.
- Do not take the prohibited items, and items allowed in the exam hall are as follows:
- Masks
- Gloves
- Personal Hand Sanitiser
- Pen
- Admit Cards
- Original PhotoID
- Personal transparent water bottle
- Exit the GATE 2021 exam centre in an orderly manner.
- Leave the GATE 2021 admit card and rough pad used in the GATE exam, on the dropbox
- Maintain social distancing norms.
