Congress Member Digvijay Singh said, "I am opposing President's address because he did not mention the facts anywhere”, adding that there was a huge gap between the Modi’s Government’s promises and their implementation.
Alleging that the lockdown was announced strategically after forming Government in Madhya Pradesh, Mr Singh further said that in Singapore, the Government gave eight days notice before lockdown but in India it happened within four hours.
Accusing the Prime Minister of misusing the federal structure while imposing the lockdown, he said migrant workers, including pregnant women and children, bore the brunt of the curb as they had to walk for kilometres to reach back their homes.
Terming the three farm Bills ''anti-farmers'', Mr Singh further said that the lodging of FIRs against farmers, journalists, activists need to be stopped. "We respect the mandate you have, but the way the dissents have been being suppressed in the country was deplorable''.
He also mentioned about the detention of the activist Sudha Bharadwaj, who was been jail for over three years. "She was a Harvard professor and now she has been in jail for the last three years for supporting Dalits in Bhima Koregaon”.
The former Prime Minister and JD(S)Member HD Deve Gowda while participating in the on Motion of Thanks on President's address raised the river-linking issue.
“Karnataka is facing deficiency in water from Cauvery basin. Karnataka is fighting with Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala for water but the Cauvery-Mahanadi too should be given preference for river-linking”, he appealed to PM Modi.
Raising the issues of farmer’s protests, he said that farmers have been the backbone of our society, and they needed to be treated right.
Speaking on the events of Republic Day, Mr Deve Gowda said that all political parties have condemned the actions of the miscreants and have agreed that they need to be punished. But the farmers' issue should not be mixed with it and the entire issue should be dealt with amicably taking state governments’ opinions into account, he added.
