Ballot papers better than EVM: NCP

Mumbai, Feb 3 (UNI) If the 2024 Assembly elections are held on 100 per cent ballot paper, the true party in the minds of people will definitely come to the fore and the winning parties will be expelled on the strength of EVM, the Nationalist Congress Party said on Wednesday.

In his statement here, NCP state chief spokesperson Mahesh Tapase said that according to Article 328 of the Constitution, the state legislature has the power to legislate on elections in the state.

Voters will now have the option of ballot papers along with EVMs, so that the scams in EVMs can be completely avoided, noted the NCP leader.

He said EVMs were not used in developed countries of the world and voters cast their ballots using paper ballots. However, EVMs were still in use in India.
No one can deny that many political parties and candidates have lodged complaints with the Election Commission (EC), alleging technical glitches in the machine and shifting of votes, he pointed out.
Mr Tapase said it was natural for some parties to be upset when the law was being drafted in Maharashtra regarding the use of ballot papers in local body and Assembly elections, but this was a step taken by the Maha Vikas Aghadi to strengthen democracy.
