Taxi strike hits Shillong, transporters demand that fossil fuels be brought under GST regime

Shillong, Feb 3 (UNI) An indefinite strike was called by the commercial vehicle drivers under the banner of the Meghalaya Joint Action Committee of Commercial Vehicles (MJACCV) against the refusal of the state government to reconsider its proposal for revision of fares in the backdrop of rise in fuel prices affecting commuters in the state capital on Wednesday.

No taxi plied the streets of the city on the first day of the indefinite strike which began on Wednesday.

Other commercial vehicles plying from various districts of Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi region into the city were also off the roads.

Business activities even in Iewduh (Barabazar) in Shillong, the biggest market not only in the state, but also the North East, was almost deserted as farmers and buyers could not make it to the market.

Traders from various parts of Upper Shillong, Mawlai, Mawpat and other places within the city had to either come on foot or were forced to use private vehicles.

Commercial areas like Motphran, Khyndailad (Police Bazar), Laitumkhrah and Polo in the state also saw only thin traffic on Wednesday .

However, the Shillong Public Transport Service buses and the Shillong Supplementary Public Transport Service maxi cabs, came to the rescue of the daily commuters.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya State Coordination Committee of Transport Operators, Owners and Drivers Associations and the Meghalaya Peoples' Labour Union (MPLU) held a meeting on Wednesday and demanded that fossil fuels be brought under the GST Regime.

“After thorough discussion it was decided that in view of the hardship faced by the inter-state passengers especially those who have made advance travel programme and are going for medical treatment outside the state, negotiations with the Transport Department are ongoing regarding the unique problems faced by the members of the Tourist Taxi Associations and therefore all tourist taxi members vehicles will ply as usual,” a statement said.

“The negotiations with government is ongoing and we also request that the Meghalaya government should negotiate with the Government of India to create a new subsidy to lower the price of petroleum, diesel and LPG cylinder for Meghalaya which is totally land locked and depends on road transportation of passenger and goods,” it said.

“Since it is a vital problem especially in these times of COVID-19, we request the support of the all people of Meghalaya on this demand since all households are effected by the rising prices in transportation, essential commodities, including LPG cylinders and cost of living in every aspect. The Meghalaya Government is also requested to bring down the state component of fuel taxes to give relief to the people,” the statement said, urging the government to negotiate to bring fossil fuels under the GST regime.
