Covid-19: SA records 2 649 new cases and 547 deaths as recovery rate reaches 90%

South Africa's Covid-19 recovery rate reached 90% as the country recorded 2 649 new cases and 547 confirmed deaths by Tuesday.

This took the cumulative number of confirmed cases to 1 458 958.

Of the 547 deaths, KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number with 143, followed by Limpopo which registered 134 fatalities.

"The province captured deaths from retrospective audits between 6 September and 29 January," Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on the unusually high number of deaths recorded in Limpopo.

Gauteng recorded 91 deaths by Tuesday, the Western Cape 69, the Eastern Cape 68, the Free State 30, Mpumalanga nine and the Northern Cape three.

The national death toll is 44 946, with the Eastern Cape having recorded the most deaths at 10 781.

To date, 8 329 691 tests have been conducted in the country, with 28 942 having been done since Monday's report.
