Expressing satisfaction over the ongoing remediation work of legacy waste dump of Mapusa Municipality, Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral said that “we have inspected the site and are happy with the progress and confident that the entire dump will be remediated before May.”

On Wednesday, Cabral along with Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo in presence of Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza inspected the ongoing
work of remediation of existing legacy waste dump at Assagao plateau.

Even managing director of Goa Waste Management Corporation Levinson Martins and other officials were also present.

“There is a small quantity which is disputed, so, we have asked managing director Levinson Martins to survey the dump and ascertain that ongoing work  is hampered” added Cabral.

He further said that “we are talking to people to have incinerator technology in Goa, so that we don’t have to send RDF outside Goa. We will be holding a meeting with the Chief Minister. Our interest is to see Goa is free from all dumps.”

He said that “meeting will be held next week. From what I have been inspecting, plants will start from August onwards for four talukas.”

Commenting on Sonsoddo, Cabral said that some are speaking in the Assembly but nobody has done anything.

“Minister Lobo has taken the initiative to sort out the issue. Land was acquired but some people are trying to turn it into a forest. I request Lobo to take possession of other areas so that Sonsoddo can be finished before May otherwise due to the space issue, work may not be
executed  as planned” added Cabral.

Lobo said “Saligao plant, Cacora plant and Bainguinim plant will handle wet waste and treat it and for RDF we need incinerator technology so that we don’t have to send it outside state and the same can be used to create energy”.
