THANE: A self-styled godman from Gujarat was arrested by an alert lady inspector after she intercepted a duo driving a numberless car in the Hiranandani Meadows area, one managed to escape.
The accused has been identified as Narsinath Madari, a resident of Gandhinagar in Gujarat and has eight cases registered against him at different police stations.
Luck ran out of the duo as Vanita Patil, police inspector attached to Chitalsar police station was driving a car after she was coming back home from the Republic Day parade in the Vasant vihar area on Republic Day.
The duo were riding a car without a number plate, Patil sensed something amiss as they were driving in quite a weird manner as if they were hunting for something, said a police officer.
But, Patil overtook their car and intercepted them at Hiranandani Meadows area.
“She questioned them for not having the number plate on the car, the duo started sweating. When asked for the credentials of the car, the duo started running helter-skelter,” said a police officer.
She gave a brief chase on foot, but one auto driver came voluntarily to help Patil and pinned down Madari, while one of them managed to flee, a police officer informed TOI.
During the interrogation, the police found that last year on 14 Feb, they had duped one rationing shop owner and took away his gold chain worth Rs 30,000 also, they were wanted in a chain snatching case.
The police during the probe found that nearly eight criminal cases have been registered against the accused in different parts of Gujarat. The police have seized the car used in the crime.
“The accused usually scout for people around temples as well as religious places and crack a conversation with their target about having certain astrological problem and flee away with their gold ornaments,” said an officer.
The police have dispatched another team to track the other accused who managed to flee away and launched the manhunt to nab him.
