CBSE Board Exams 2021: Double shift introduced for the first time ever

NAGPUR: CBSE’s examination department seems to have clearly thought ‘outside the box’ in coming up with innovative measures for its board exams beginning in May. From double shift papers, to increased gap between important subjects, to reduction in exam calendar days, CBSE’s 2021 board exam datesheet (timetable) has it all.
Sanyam Bhardwaj, CBSE’s controller of examinations, said the biggest challenge before him was to keep proper gaps between papers. “We did not want anyone to say that science students got a better deal or certain important papers were too close to each other. So, a lot of planning went into all these things,” said Bhardwaj.
The double shift exams, only for Std XII, begins with the first slot at 10am and the other at 2.30pm. It’s only the optional subjects which have been put into second shift, and no mandatory paper is scheduled on that day. Bhardwaj said, “Teachers who work in morning shift won’t be given duty in second shift, to ensure that there is no additional burden for them.”
The only challenge for students in Nagpur will be the summer heat. With temperatures peaking in May, it won’t be an easy task to appear for these crucial exams. This, however, is not a problem for CBSE students alone, as even state board’s SSC and HSC exams will continue right till end of May.
City school principals feel that CBSE has done a ‘fair enough’ job, given the multiple restrictions in place due to Covid-19. Ritu Sharma, principal of Delhi Public School (Kamptee Road), said, “I think it’s a really good plan that CBSE has chalked up. Considering the scale of the exam and different geographies involved, along with Covid-19 restrictions, this is probably the best bet to get the academic schedule back on track as early as possible.”
For the summer heat, students of both state board and CBSE will just have to acclimatize. Shilpee Ganguly, principal of Centre Point School (Katol Road), said, “Parents will have to ensure that their kids get used to it. Though some students appear for competitive exams in peak summer but that’s just for a single day. Here they have to do it on multiple days. But I think it will be managed without any major issue.”
CBSE Board exams:
Exams start: May 4 for both X & XII
Exams end: June 7 (X), June 11 (XII)
For Std X, all papers will be in morning shift
For Std XII, four optional papers will be in afternoon shift
