This year's Varsity Cup university rugby tournament looks set to go ahead.
According to SA Rugbymag, plans for the tournament taking place have been approved following a meeting of the Varsity Cup board and representatives from the participating universities.
Negotiations over when and where the tournament will be held are still ongoing.
The 2021 edition will consist of 10 teams and there will be no promotion or relegation from the Varsity Shield.
Nelson Mandela University's Madibaz were promoted last year to join the other nine participants (Maties, UP Tuks, NWU Pukke, UCT, UJ, Shimlas, UWC, Wits and CUT Ixias).
There will be no promotion-relegation in 2021, with the six Varsity Shield teams - CPUT, Rhodes, TUT Vikings, UFH Blues, UKZN Impi and WSU All Blacks - only given a chance to qualify for the top league in 2022.
Maties are the reigning Varsity Cup champions, having beaten Tuks 34-12 in the 2019 final. The Stellenbosch students had topped the standings with five wins from five matches when the 2020 season was cancelled.
An official announcement regarding the fixtures will be made in due course.
